Palestinian Journalists Report Torture, Abuse in Israeli Detention
As stated by reports, a study found that at least 94 Palestinian journalists—32 from Gaza, 60 from the West Bank, and two from Israel—along with one media worker, have been detained by Israeli forces since October 2023.
Interviews with 59 journalists who were later released reveal a consistent pattern of abuse, including physical beatings, starvation, and sexual violence, sometimes amounting to rape, during their imprisonment.
Many also recounted psychological intimidation, being forced into stress positions that caused long-lasting pain, and exposure to prolonged loud sounds, including continuous music. The review of materials such as photographs, medical records, and legal documents submitted by the freed journalists supported these claims.
“CPJ’s reporting shows a clear pattern in how Palestinian journalists were treated in Israeli custody,” CPJ CEO Jodie Ginsberg said in a statement.
