Iran, Russia Conduct Joint Naval Exercise

(MENAFN) Iran and Russia conducted a joint naval exercise in the Gulf of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean on Thursday, successfully executing a series of coordinated military operations amid escalating regional tensions with Washington.

According to a report published on the Iranian army's official website, special operations teams from Iran's army, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and Russian naval forces jointly carried out a simulated mission to retake a hijacked vessel — one of several tactical scenarios enacted during the drill.

Naval vessels and aerial units from both countries also participated, conducting aerial reconnaissance, surface operations, and mock pirate capture missions. Iran's Alvand destroyer, missile-launching warships, helicopters, landing craft, combat speedboats, and dedicated special operations teams were all deployed as part of the exercise.

Participating units rehearsed multiple deployment strategies and combined maneuver techniques, running through various tactical arrangement scenarios and offensive formations designed to sharpen coordination, strengthen joint command and control capabilities, and test rapid response readiness under simulated operational conditions.

Hassan Maqsoudlou, the drill's official spokesman, said the exercise was intended to bolster maritime security, deepen naval cooperation between the two countries, and refine coordination in joint operations, according to a news agency.

The joint exercise followed an IRGC drill in the Strait of Hormuz earlier in the week, during which the critical strategic waterway was temporarily closed on Tuesday — a move that coincided with heightened Iran-US tensions and a growing American military buildup across the region.
