UN Chief voices concern over ongoing protests in Iran

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday expressed concern over ongoing protests across Iran that have persisted for over a week and caused casualties nationwide.

A UN spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said, “I can tell you that the Secretary General is following with concern the ongoing protest in the Islamic Republic of Iran. He's deeply saddened by the reported loss of life and injuries resulting from clashes between security forces and protesters.”

Guterres emphasized the “need to prevent any further casualties” and called on Iranian authorities to respect citizens’ rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly. “All individuals must be allowed to protest peacefully and express their grievances,” Dujarric added. He also stressed that all parties in Iran and the broader region should avoid actions that could escalate tensions or worsen instability.

According to reports, the demonstrations have reached at least 222 sites across 78 cities, with incidents recorded in 26 provinces. The unrest has involved street protests, labor strikes, and student-led actions at 17 universities, continuing despite increased security presence and suppression efforts.

At least 20 people have been killed in the unrest, including a member of law enforcement, and 51 others injured—mostly from pellets and plastic bullets fired by security forces. Those affected include students, workers, and civilians between the ages of 16 and 45, according to local monitoring groups.
