Iran Declares Royal Canadian Navy "Terrorist Organization"

(MENAFN) Iran’s Foreign Ministry announced Tuesday that the Royal Canadian Navy has been designated a “terrorist organization,” a retaliatory measure against Canada’s earlier decision to classify Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as a “terrorist entity.”

In its statement, the ministry condemned Ottawa’s “illegal” move in June 2024 to blacklist the IRGC, describing it as “one of the pillars of Iran’s official armed forces” and asserting that the decision was in “contradiction with the fundamental international law principles.”

Invoking the principle of reciprocity and a 2019 law, Iran declared that it “identifies and announces the Royal Canadian Navy as a terrorist organization.”

Canada had previously listed the IRGC as a “terrorist entity” under the Criminal Code on June 19, 2024, citing it as a “response to the IRGC’s terrorist acts on its own and in knowing association with listed terrorist entities, such as Hezbollah and Hamas.”
