(MENAFN) A deadly overnight assault in southern Iran resulted in four fatalities, including three law enforcement officers and one civilian, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced Tuesday.

According to a statement, armed elements attacked a checkpoint at the entrance of the city of Fahraj, Kirman province.

The IRGC did not release additional information regarding the circumstances surrounding the assault or the identities of the attackers.

Authorities have yet to disclose whether suspects have been apprehended or if investigations into the checkpoint breach are ongoing. The security incident marks another episode of violence in the region, raising concerns about potential escalation.

Local security forces have reportedly heightened alert levels at other checkpoints throughout Kirman province following the deadly confrontation that unfolded during nighttime hours.
