Pope Leo XIV marks council of Nicaea in Turkey
His stop in Iznik came after earlier engagements in Ankara and Istanbul, forming part of a broader visit to the country. The ceremony drew attention to the historic council’s lasting role in shaping Christian tradition, a point the pope emphasized by describing the milestone as a meaningful occasion.
During his remarks, he noted that the global community continues to suffer from unrest and violence, stressing that societies everywhere long for healing and harmony. He underscored that faith must never be invoked to legitimize conflict, stating firmly that religion should not serve as a pretext for war or any kind of extremism or fanaticism.
The pontiff also offered appreciation to Patriarch Bartholomew for launching the initiative and reiterated calls for solidarity, understanding, and peace among peoples.
After completing his schedule in Iznik, Pope Leo XIV planned to return to Istanbul ahead of his departure for Beirut, Lebanon’s capital, on Sunday.
