Brazil is in "final phase" of partaking genocide lawsuit against Israel

(MENAFN) Brazil has announced that it is in the final stages of officially joining South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which accuses Israel of committing acts of genocide against Palestinians.

In a public statement, Brazil voiced “deep indignation at the recurring episodes of violence against the civilian population in the State of Palestine, not limited to the Gaza Strip but extending to the West Bank.”

The government cited multiple alleged violations of international human rights, including "attacks on civilian infrastructure, including religious sites such as the Catholic parish in Gaza, and United Nations facilities like those of the World Health Organization."

Brazil also condemned “indiscriminate violence and vandalism by extremist settlers in the West Bank,” specifically referencing incidents such as the burning of the remnants of the historic Church of St. George and the destruction of a Byzantine-era cemetery in the town of Taybeh.

The statement went on to highlight “massacres of civilians, most of them women and children, which have become commonplace during the delivery of humanitarian aid in Gaza” as well as “the shameless use of starvation as a weapon of war.”

According to the Brazilian government, the move to join the lawsuit is grounded in its responsibility to uphold obligations under international and humanitarian law—both of which it claims have been breached by Israel’s conduct.

South Africa originally submitted the case to the ICJ in December 2023. It accuses Israel of carrying out genocidal acts against Palestinians. Since then, various other nations have either applied to participate in the case or expressed their intent to do so.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has consistently been one of the most outspoken world leaders regarding the situation in Gaza, characterizing Israel’s actions as genocide and retribution. His comparison of Israel’s military campaign to the Holocaust prompted Israeli officials to declare him “persona non grata.”

Meanwhile, over 100 humanitarian groups have issued warnings about widespread starvation in Gaza.
